Birmingham Sparkbrook NPRG and Den Haag

Clear up 23 patches of waste ground in Sparkbrook with 23 days of communal effort: that was the deal the Sparkbrook Neighbourhood Forum struck with Birmingham City Council in summer 2007. They are one of four community groups experimenting with new ways to control public money. They are taking part in a pilot called the Neighbourhood Performance Reward Grant or NPRG. In 2007 the Forum received £10,000 from Birmingham City Council to help make the neighbourhood cleaner and safer. In the end the money and volunteers combined tackled 40 sites, among them plots which took weeks of work.

This short introductory film was made for a conference in The Hague in January 2008. Click here for an audio podcast explaining this in more detail.
